Bruno Clerbout of the Uplace Triathlon Team has finished fifth in today’s Olympic Distance triathlon of Kapelle-op-den-Bos (Belgium). Bruno, who won his hometown race last year, completed the 1500 m swimming, 40 km cycling and 10 km running in a time of 1:50:39. Stijn Goris won the race, finishing in 1:47:41 before Marc Geerts (1:48:30) and Pieter Heemeryck (1:49:37). Marjolein Truyers (2:05:07) won the women’s race, beating Karolien Geerts (2:06:44) and Jolien Lewyllie (2:07:02) for the win.

After a poor swimming start, Bruno made his move in the cycling leg. After three km, he had moved from the 14th position to two minutes from the leaders. In the running stage he moved up two more places from seventh position to finish fifth.

As a long distance triathlon specialist, Bruno started the race with modest expectations. As a result, he was more than happy with his fifth place. “I did as good as I could. For me, a top three result is the goal in long distance races. The Olympic Distance has its own specialists. I was also still recuperating from the Ironman France, which meant I was not able to train for this race. But you can always do more in front of a hometown crowd. The support in the streets of Kapelle-op-den-Bos today was amazing.”

Bruno has also decided he will not participate in this year’s Hawaii Ironman: “It’s no use trying to qualify for Hawaii 2010 at all cost only to start in Hawaii without any strength left. I am moving forward. For me, the 2011 season has started. Hawaii 2011 will not be taken from me. Together with the whole team, we are compiling the best possible 2011 calendar. The 2011 Ironman rules will make the season and the qualification for Hawaii extra tough. Putting together the perfect training and race calendar will be crucial.”
